TMS Therapy

TMS THERAPY FOR DEPRESSION

TMS Therapy is a treatment for those who suffer from depression and have not received full relief from medications. It uses highly
focused pulsed magnetic waves to stimulate nerve cells in the area of the brain which is thought to control mood. TMS Therapy is a treatment that is performed in our office and under the supervision of our physicians and coordinators.

It is a non-invasive, meaning that it does not involve surgery or a procedure. It does not require any anesthesia or sedation, and you remain awake and alert during the treatment. TMS Therapy for Depression is non-Systemic, meaning that it is not taken by mouth and does not circulate in the blood stream throughout the body. For example, antidepressant medications often cause side effects due to it entering the blood stream and affecting other bodily systems. This is why patient using antidepressants may suffer from constipation, dry mouth, loss of libido and other activity limiting side effects. TMS Therapy for Depression does not have these side effects. The most common side effects reported during clinical trials were headache and scalp pain or discomfort. If they occur they are generally mild to moderate and occur less frequently after the first week of treatment.

The treatment coil is applied to the head above the left prefrontal cortex. This part of the brain is involved with mood regulation, and therefore is the location where the magnetic fields are focused. These magnetic fields do not directly affect the whole brain; they only reach about 2-3 centimeters into the brain directly beneath the treatment coil. As these magnetic fields move into the brain, they produce very small electrical currents. These electrical currents activate cells within the brain which are thought to release neurotransmitters.
